3rd month stats

Ovya had her doc appt on Saturday and she weighed in at a healthy 4.75 kgs with a head circumference of 38 cms. She had put on exactly a kilo from the last month, and that is a little more that I had guessed. Which is just excellent :)

Her shots gave her a light temperature that lasted a whole day; but she cheery and talkative as usual. I am just having so much fun listening to her. The great thing is that she does not demand your presence in the room. If you are around, she will talk to you. Else she will look around, observe things or just talk to the fan! Such a cutie...

A study of contrasts

We have always wondered whether we would be in awe of the milestones reached by Ovya after celebrating them with Kavin. But each kid is different and there is so much to observe and enjoy. For instance, Ovya's head was fairly stable at the end of 2 mos and is completely stable now, almost at the end of 3 mos. She has been talking for the last month and is so much more louder and vocal now. I cannot remember Kav being so expressive in so short a time. But where Kav was very physical and constantly in motion, Ovya is less so. But she has already started turning from tummy to back (first time on 17th Dec), which Kav did in prolly his 5th month.

Ovya is exactly 3 mos old today and weighed in at 3.75 kgs at the end of 2 mos during her last appointment exactly a month back. She has her shots this evening and I am very curious how much weight she would have put on. About 800 gms would be my guess. She has also become a good sleeper since getting her to sleep on her tummy. That is the best advice I have ever received on child rearing :).

We had the monthly parents meet at Kav's school today. The same feedback; naughty but sweet, more interested in playing than rhymes. He has his Sports day scheduled next month and will be in the cricket team apart from running. He also has his Annual Day in March and will be put into an event after gauging his interest.

We had an interesting talk with the principal on the local schools for his LKG admission, and that is an exercise that we have to start in earnest soon. The conflicting reports that we are getting on schools like Sankara, Vana Vani and Vidya Mandir is making the selection process very difficult. One thing we are clear is not to get him into the so-called elite schools like Sishya or the International schools. Heard good things about the Abacus school in Perungudi but admission might be tough so late. Need to dig about the Pon Vidyashram and a couple of other schools still.

First smile!

Ovya gave me her first smile today when I was playing with her! It was funny since she was squinting at me hard and then broke into a beaming, 'pokka vaayee' smile. I can't wait for Rajesh to see it and get his heart broken as well :). She has been trying to focus onto faces and objects for over a week now. She looks extremely serious when she does it, prompting a friend to call her an 'indigo baby'...

I had my ob-gyn appt last week on the 23rd and Ovya weighed in at 3.14 kgs that day. My doc was concerned and asked me to supplement with formula till she gains some weight. But we have decided not to and wait for another 15 days till her next vaccination and see how it goes, esp since Ovya's ped has not recommended this as yet. I have increased the feed duration and see a slight improvement already.

Her sleep is slightly better. Her naps in the morning are good, so long as there are no big noises and her food is well digested. We make sure we hold her upright for 1/2 hour after a feed to help with it. At night, she sleeps anywhere between midnight and 1am and wakes up only around 6.30am. The uninterrupted time really helps me recoup. Also I have moved her from the crib to the bassinet to reduce the reflux.

Mixed bag

Parenting is all about unpredictability, I guess! Ovya has started to sleep through the night this week. All by herself, she has regulated to sleep from about 10pm to about 7am, waking up once early morning for a feed. We are just amazed that this has happened so quickly. I think for Kav, this happened after the 3rd month. So that's the good part...

To the down side. She is just not sleeping during the day. I mean, a baby is supposed to sleep close to 20 hours, right? She dozes off and on for some 20 mins through the day, prolly totalling 3-4 hours. She seems to be suffering from reflux and maybe that's what is waking her up from her naps. Her not sleeping during the day means me, not sleeping during the day, plus holding and craddling her a lot leaves me real tired at the end of the day. Today I have made her nap in her bassinet rather than the crib with her head well elevated to see if that helps.

Yesterday, Rajesh called out her name and she moved her head to the other side in the direction of the sound! He repeated it a couple more times with the same result. She does that when Kav talks to her as well. It is so funny that her eyes still can't focus right but she moves around as if to look anyways :)

Kav's school has re-started after the break today. He was excited to go and even had his breakfast with no fuss!

First doc visit

Ovya's first visit to the paediatrician was on Oct 1st. At 12 days, she weighed in at 2.65 kgs. She was losing her water weight. Dr Sharada gave her the all clear for jaundice and also gave her the BCG shot.

I enquired about Kav's long pending Hep A shots as well. She was ready to administer it and so was Kav! He kept asking for injection :). When she gave him the shot, it was an unbelievable moment for us. Kav did not even bat an eyelid! Even the doc was stunned. My son has such a high tolerance and he just went back to playing after it. He has grown up so much, and seems like a different boy since Ovya came along. He is just not bothering me, asking me for my time or attention, or being jealous of the new entrant to the family. Rajesh and I were so worried about his reaction esp since he has 2 weeks off for Navratri, but he has been so generous and mature about it. He is just playing with his cars or grandparents, and has been happy with whenever I can spend some time with him. Thanks a lot, my baby...

Ovya's first week

Ovya slept through the first night of her life. Fingers crossed for this to continue; but we know that's wishful thinking where babies are concerned :). She received her polio drops and Hepatitis shots before being discharged home. Her bilirubin count was normal as well.

Once home on Monday evening, we were met with our in-laws and Kav, plus a beautifully done up crib (in pink, what else) by Deepa aunty. She settled in just fine. Kav was just so adorable playing the role of the big brother. He wanted her to stay awake all the time and talk to him as well. He seems to be so grown up now that there is a littler one at home!

Ovya is taking the feeds just fine. She is typically awake some 5 hours in a day, about 2 hours in the morning, about 1 hour in the evening and about 2 hours in the night. The night wakings fluctuate though, and it just our luck whether this is early in the night or early in the morning, which is a killer cause that's when we are most sleepy. She needs to be held for the most part when she is awake. She feeds about 30-45 mins every time about 2-3 hours apart.

Sep 30th was her naming ceremony attended by close relatives andfriends only. About 40 invitees at home. She did ok initially but became really cranky as things were winding up. She was gifted tons of cute clothes and accessories, plus some cash as well. She also got some jewellery. Kav enjoyed having a big crowd at home as usual. She was given the names Ovya by us, Jayalakshmi by Janaki paati and Bala by Kothai paati.

Ovya's birth

My last appointment with the doc was on Friday, the 19th. I was 2 cms dilated and the baby was at -1 station when she conducted the internal exam. So the doc predicted that I will deliver anywhere in the next 4 days. It was a relief to see the light at the end of the tunnel :). We landed up at a Mediterranean restaurant for some falafels and our friends joined us as well. Started to feel a bit uncomfortable though, and hence we finished up fast and started to drive to our place.

I think that's when the adventure began! Our car ended up being punctured, thankfully close to home. So I hopped into my friend's car and drove home, while the guys tried to repair the car, and found that the backup tyre was punctured as well! So they drove home slowly, and that's how we ended up retaining our friend's car that night. I didn't stay up long and went to bed, as my friends and Rajesh stayed up late talking.

Soon I started to feel all crampy in my tummy. I racked it up to the doc exam in the evening and didn't pay much attention. Having some gelusil did not help either. The cramps lasted all night, and I started to feel hungry early in the morning. As Rajesh made some sandwich for me, I started to time my cramps for the first time. They lasted anywhere from 10-30 secs and were occurring 3-5 mins apart. Instinctively, I wanted to get it checked out, although I still thought it was owing to the very uncomfortable internal exam the previous evening. So Rajesh and I just picked up my already packed bag and drove to the hospital just before 6am (thanks to the Simhans for forcing us to retain their car that night!). Kav was at my moms that night since I was sure that I would not deliver over the weekend!

At the hospital, Dr Akhila first examined me and said there was no change in my condition since last night. Just as I thought I would be discharged, Dr Shanthi came in, checked me and observed that the contractions seem to have started. Even before I could ask her what that meant, she broke my water bag and asked the nurse to start me on picotin! So that was it!! Soon the anaestheologist came to get me hooked onto epidural. I was enormously tensed since the epidural had hit my spinal during Kav's delivery. This time it went fine though, but just moments after the epidural I developed a monstrous headache, the like of which I never knew existed!! This was around 6.30 am.

Rajesh joined me in the labor room now after completing the admission formalities. The contractions were getting stronger I believe, but I didn't feel a thing. I was hooked to a fetal monitor and the nurse kept monitoring the baby's heart beat during every contraction.

Shanthi came in around 8.30am and I assumed it was to just check on me. I was wrong again! She said I was ready to deliver since the baby's heart rate was dropping during every contraction, sometimes upto 80%. She asked me to push at her signal, and she kept her vaccuum pump and forceps ready to take the baby out if needed. With the worst pounding headache of my life and an anaesthesia that was on overdrive, I just nodded away. With Rajesh holding my head up and some 5-6 nurses around me assisting the birth, I just had to push 2 times and the baby was out.

Shanthi just smiled and cheekily asked us 'What did you say was the name of your daughter??'. It was such a sweet moment that brought me to tears, and the next second, she placed my daughter on my tummy and started to clean up. The time was 8.42 am. A quick labor, thankfully.

Rajesh was one happy daddy and kept clicking away photos of his daughter. She cried during the cleanup, but was bright eyed and quiet when done. She had big, beautiful eyes with which she kept staring and mesmerising everybody. My mom was the first visitor pacing outside to catch a glimpse of her. After I was stitched up, I was wheeled to my room where we (hubby, mom, mom-in-law, Kav and the Simhans) awaited our daugher, Ovya, to be brought from the nursery.

We have a baby girl!!

The wait is finally over. I gave birth to a baby girl last Saturday, Sep 20th, @8.42 am. She weighed in at 2.8 kgs (exact same as her brother) and 50 cms long (2 cms longer than Kav). It was a normal delivery with my baby coming out some 2.5 hours after I got myself admitted into the hospital.

We have named her Ovya and she is doing great. More photos at picasaweb/ramyarajesh.

Two days before completing his 5th month, Kavin rolled over onto his tummy. He's become chunkier since I started cereal and I've been noticing that he has gained enormous strength and control of his head, back and hands. I guess he let go of his initial fear of rolling over and just did it yesterday!!He has been rolling over pretty easily from tummy to back the past week. I am so glad that I kept putting him on his tummy inspite of advices to the contrary from the old ladies around me!! Its really helped him gain strength and hence confidence. He has been rolling back and forth and back and forth continuously all morning today. I can't keep him on my bed any longer. So I am making our living room his play area and moving away all the rug and furniture. We all went to a couple of restaurants with him recently. He was pretty well behaved. We got him a stroller last week and getting him used to it. As for solids, he has tried carrots, peas (Gerber) and apples so far. He hated potatoes. I will give him bananas the next 4 days.I measured him at home yesterday and he was 26.5 inches long. So he has gained much more than half a foot since birth. He has started practising his b-ahs and b-urs and p-ahs. I think he's over the vowels. I haven't videotaped him in a while, but his talking is real funny and should be captured. I've started a mommy blog at http://storyofamommy.blogspot.com. So check that out!

Kavin will be 20 weeks old tomorrow. Let's see. What happened this month? He started on solid foods successfully. Loved carrots. Hated potatoes. Am going to start sweet potatoes or green beans tomorrow. I love feeding him solids. He opens his mouth as soon as I put him in his chair! It's so funny when he gets impatient between spoon and let's out a roar as if scolding me. Just love it. Aint that crazy?!!I wonder what his weight is now. Home scale shows 11.5 lbs.Took him to Triplicane last week for the first time. He got more clothes as gifts. We went to a restaurant for the first time yesterday. I was scared, but he was so well behaved. Just looked around a bit, and then started practising his sounds. He started fussing a teeny tiny bit when he felt sleepy. By then, I had finished the main course and was able to rock him to sleep very quickly. Totally loved the experience. I am so glad that Rajesh insisted that we should get out!

Kavin is 16 weeks old. I will prolly be starting him on cereal very soon. We got a high chair for him. Just need to find a good time to feed him the solids. We got him his first play gym over the weekend. It is a kick and play carnival with lights and sounds. So far, he does look at the moving ferris wheel, but is not too bothered when it stops. I just wanted to get him all the toys that were in Lifestyle!! They have a great collection, and have all the hi end brand names. All at US prices though :(Kavin has started to give noisy giggles. But it is reserved only for daddy. Similarly, his loudest shrieks and talks are with daddy as well. It is amazing to see how he interacts differently with each of us.He has started to hold up his head farely well. He can sit up for a bit on a sofa or against a cushion. I was planning a get together last weekend for Rajesh's bday, and was thinking he can hold Kavin and cut the cake. Didn't work out, as my grandpa passed away the previous day. So took Kavin to my mom's place for the whole day. He was such a gem. Playing by himself and fussing very little. Felt like the luckiest mommy in the whole world :))

Kavin is exactly 3 1/2 months old today. He had another dose of vaccinations at his doctor's today. She was real happy with his weight gain this month. It stands at 4.8 kgs now. She said that it was time to get a play gym for him. She said that the hand chewing and lotsa drooling were all normal, and that he didn't have an ear infection. I told her that he takes breaks and looks around a lot when feeding. She said just get used to it :) Doc also has given the go ahead to start him on rice cereal. I am real excited about it. She joked that I am going to be an obsessive mom. Thank you very much :P He talked a lot with her as well. She said that he was going to be very vocal about his likes and dislikes. Ain't that true already!!Kamala, Nithya and Jaggu thatha came to visit him yesterday. Nithya got him doggies on train tracks. He's too small to play with them. But she was so excited about it. So we assembled it and showed it to Kavin. He did look at it for a bit, and that made her real happy. Such a nice chitti for Kavin!Yesterday, we video taped him talking non-stop for 20 mins. He actually talked more, but Rajesh got tired of holding the camera and the battery became low as well! His doc was interested in starting classes for new moms, and I totally encouraged her to push for it at the hospital. It would be awesome to interact with other moms and get the babies to play together. She asked me not to kiss him since I had fever. So I am totally bummed out about it :(

Thursday, July 28, 2005
I had Kavin on his tummy 2 days back. He hated it as usual. But this time, he made different noises, lifted his butt and just flipped over to his back. I squealed so much, hugged and kissed him and basically scared the hell outta him!! He did it again the same day but didn't after daddy came home :)Another major development (more for me than him!) was he slept in the crib 2 nights back. It was a pretty smooth transition from the bassinet. He has started to hold and pull our fingers towards his mouth, hold the rattle and even shake it and of course, talk real loud and endlessly.I can't wait for his noisy giggles next..

Thursday, July 21, 2005
13 weeks and 5 days old. Kavin has started to grab and hold things that catch his fancy. Like mom's nose, dad's watch and his 'raatnam' toy. And I think he has crossed 10 lbs as well.He has become extremely vocal and loud. Needs someone to play and talk to all the time.He just thrilled me 3 days back by jumping to me from my cousin's hands, when I held out my hands. How the heck did he know to do that!! We found out later that that's his fav game now.

Wednesday, July 13, 2005
Kavin's now started his 13th week. It's exactly a month since the last journal entry. He's gaining weight now. He is at 4.2 kgs and has added on 2 more cms. Breast feeding is now well established and my advice to new moms hereon will be to tough it out the first 2 months. He's doing so many things that I am sure I will forget to list something here! He smiles a lot, is very friendly with new faces as well, can talk non-stop till sleep time, talks to his mobile and toys, recognises faces and just loves eye contact. He has just started to like tummy time a bit more than before. He can lift and move his head from one side to the other. No rolling over yet.We were at my mom's for about 10 days last month. I don't think he even noticed the change. He came back with lotsa mosquito love bites!!His night sleep is kinda established. He sleeps anywhere between 9.10-11.30 and sleeps till about 7, with one feed around 3am. He's been more sleepy this week. Maybe having a growth spurt. His first long outing was last week to Caddy and Supriya's wedding at Dakshinachitra. But he slept thro' the whole ceremony! Every time, we take him out in the car, he falls asleep. Our rough roads sure do have one benefit of lulling a baby to sleep :)We took him to 'Just Born' and made him try out the bouncers, prams and play gyms there. I was more excited than he was doing all that. Those vibrating bouncers are too darned expensive though. Should get him a play gym once he starts to grab things. What else? Nothing much. Just that he's such a darling, so mild mannered and I love him soooooo much :))

Monday, June 13, 2005
It's been a while since I updated here. Time's been just right to feed and play with Kavin. He has just entered his 3rd month. Today was doc's appt for 2 immunisation injections (my poor baby) and OPV drops. His wt was 3.71 kgs and he has grown by 7cms. Doc was satisfied with gain but asked me to add 3 more feedings during the day to help him gain even more. Easy to say, but there are just 24 hours in a day!!!Kavin's been smiling like crazy and talking non-stop when not feeding or sleeping. Yesterday, during his 10pm feeding, I started to cough. He stopped eating and gave me one of his biggest, lop-sided smiles for many heart stopping seconds :) Why did he do that? Did he realise that my cough was irritating me?? Kavin has his biggest smiles for first thing in the morning. So much so, that he has turned me into a morning person. ME. Who even hated the thought of 6am and has hardly seen sun rises!! Motherhood sure changes a woman!!I've to get more toys to keep him engaged. Babies certainly do grow up fast, and he has become so attentive so soon. Ok, gotta feed him now to get the 10-12 feedings in today....

Monday, May 09, 2005
Yesterday was my first Mother's Day. Probably one of the best days of my life!! Rajesh got me a cute card and an RK Narayan book and presented on Kavin's behalf. My baby also gave me the most wonderful gift by smiling at me all day :) In 2 days, he's started interacting so much more.Rajesh and I also went out to dinner alone for the first time after Kavin's birth. We went to a nice (although expensive) Meditteranean restaurant at Kotturpuram. I was suprised and happy not to be obssessed about Kavin. It was nice to just be with Rajesh after a loong time.

Friday, May 06, 2005
My baby is 3 weeks old already!! Seems like just yesterday when he came out, all crying and kicking. We have started to notice a tremendous increase in his responses to us. He is more attentive when we talk and has started to make sweet, little noises. My mom also swears that he smiles at her. Although I have caught him on numerous occasions smiling in his sleep.I hate giving him the supplement but looks like he needs it. The first time he was so confused by the bottle, but now he is managing just fine.

Monday, May 02, 2005
Kavin is over 2 weeks old now. And I have so many updates. Week 1 was a lesson in patience. He used to cry upto 2 hours each night and mostly continuously. There was really no rhyme or reason to it. We took turns to hold and try and put him to sleep. I have slowly started to sing and talk a whole lot to him! He just did not know how to fall asleep by himself at nights. His weight at the 1st week appointment was 2.56 kgs. Babies lose the water weight in the first week and gain back in the next 2 weeks. He also got his first tuberculosis shot. There were so many exciting things he did every day. Rajesh had taken the first week off and so we both enjoyed it. He held his head on the 3rd day itself. And rolled over completely in the 1st week (scared the beejeeses out of me!!). We could see that he was responding to sound by the end of the week.Week 2 saw him responding to day and night a lil better. He sometimes slept upto 4 hours between feedings. But he still took an hour to feed. I didn't see any appreciable increase in weight. Life was one big cycle of feeding, eating and crying! He loved a good bath. His stubbornness showed through this week. Lotsa guests. They started to comment he is looking more and more like Rajesh and his dad. We had his naming ceremony on May 1st and had over 70 guests. It was a fun, informal function. Kavin was given 3 more names: Sridhar, Ishwar and Yatesh. His weight at doc's appointment today was still pretty much the same. So I've started to supplement my milk with formula 2-3 times a day. Hoping that he will put on weight in the next 2 weeks.

Monday, April 18, 2005
Well, my 'instincts' were all wrong. My boy was infact in a hurry to get out. From early morning on the 15th, I started to feel some cramps that were not too bad and spaced some 20 mins apart. By 10am, they were lasting anywhere from 15-40 secs and were coming 5mins apart. It still didn't feel very painful but they were tiring me out.So mom and I went to the hospital around noon for a general consultation. I did take a backpack with some toiletries though if they turned out to be the real thing. My doc took one look at me and said 'You look too happy to be in labor'. Well, how wrong she was!! I was 4cms dilated with a totally soft cervix. I was put immediately in the labor room and an IV and epidural was started.By the time Rajesh got to the labor room, everything was setup. An initial push attempt around 3pm was not effective, so doc went home. When she came back at 5pm, I was ready and Kavin was out in 40 mins.He cried for a few minutes soon after but settled down once he was handed over to daddy. He weighed in at 2.8 kgs and around 22 inches tall. We stayed on in the hospital till Monday and were discharged Sunday evening. Now, we are settling down at home and having a crash course at the 'fun' nightlife of parenthood :)

11 more days to go. I don't see much progress towards an early delivery. Baby's head is moving down bit by bit, and I've felt a little cramping the last few days. But the doc pretty much said that I would go on till my due date and that she will even wait 10 days after before deciding to induce or whatever. I've been walking and stretching in the hope that it would help things along. My biggest joy last week was when I found a carpenter to make some shelves for our home!! Storage has been very tight and now I can make all the book shelves and toy chests that I want.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005
Due in 18 more days. Saturday checkup showed that I was 60% effaced but not dilated at all. Dosen't mean a darn thing apparently. I could deliver tomorrow or go over the due date!! The baby's movements are going strong. The head has not yet 'dropped'. Almost done with all the shopping. Shwetha got me a baby monitor and a newborn tub from the US. So I just had to get an infant bathtub. Plus some nighties, robes and other miscellaneous for myself. I also got around to getting a washing machine to help out my maid with all the baby's clothes and washcloths later.I just have to get the baby clothes all washed up once to soften them a bit. btw, Madras is jus lovely-o-lovely after some heavy rainfall the last coupla days. It would be nice to deliver during pleasant weather.

Monday, March 28, 2005
Due in 26 more days. Doc's weekend appt was normal. A final u/s showed that the baby was in the right position for a normal delivery. I received a list of baby supplies needed for the hospital stay and was surprised to learn that the hospital provides absolutely nothing! No pads, no diapers, no sheets. I've been reading up on some labor stories, and am so surprised by how varied the experiences are. Right from symptoms before labor to the actual labor pains and delivery. So it will be interesting to note how my own experiences will be.For now, I have learnt that it is very, very important to be conscious of the baby's movements and count atleast 10 movements every 6 hours.

Wednesday, March 23, 2005
Its' exactly 30 days now to DD!! Yesterday, I went with Sandhya to Lifestyle and Babylous to get most of the initial baby stuff. I now have a week's supply of shirts, onesies, diapers, nappy pads, bath products etc. Just some shopping for me left. And packing it all in.Lifestyle was pretty disappointing in its selection and help staff. But these specialty stores are good and stock everything that's needed. I am only confused about what bathtub to get now.

Sunday, March 13, 2005
I am 34 weeks and 2 days done! We've finished air-conditioning the entire house in time for the baby and an already scorching summer. Yesterday I went to Triplicane with my parents to see the Theppam after years. That stinky place still makes me go sentimental 'cause I was born in a hospital in that area and have fond memories of early childhood. There was no peep out of my baby during the entire stay, so I don't think s/he shares my sentiments. Like father, like baby! But it did wake up when I had a wonderful Amul cornetto in Marina. My cousin Nithya got my baby its first dress (one day ahead of me). She is so stroked and is planning to get tons of stuff once the sex is known. I am pampered like crazy by my aunts and cousins and I love it :)Mom has taken off for a few months now to stay with us. So bye bye to the kitchen for now. But my poor dad has to say hi hi and start cooking for himself now. My weight : 151 lbs, a gain of 38 pounds. (Did I just swoon?? I hope I have one fat baby, so I can lose it all soon). btw, I still can't start thinking in metric. US of A be damned!

Sunday, March 06, 2005
I can now happily say that my due date is next month!! Yippeeeeeeee. Now in the 34th week (33 and 2 days complete) and around 40 days to DD.The doc's visit over the weekend was normal. She also conducted a seminar on labor and childbirth that was compulsary for dads-to-be as well. Learnt that I will be kept in the hospital for 3 days even if I have a normal delivery. Also I bought my first baby clothes on Sunday at Just Born! Made me real happy.

Thursday, February 24, 2005
So that was wishful thinking about my weight gain. I put on 2 kgs in 2 weeks before my doc's visit last Saturday. She wasen't too pleased and blaming her weighing machine didn't help either!!The Seemandam function on Sunday went on fine. It was a fun affair and well attended by 80-odd friends and family members. I stayed with my mom for the next few days as per tradition.

Tuesday, February 15, 2005
Baby's been moving and poking around like crazy all week. It's left me wondering 'when is s/he resting?!!'. I still haven't been able to figure out body parts though except maybe the legs. The shopping we did last weekend in Indira Nagar was pretty reassuring. The store had everything from cribs and diapers to nursing pads and maternity clothes. They were mostly of local make though without any safety certifications. I've been walking regularly for the past 2 weeks. Hopefully that will reflect in a reasonable weight gain with the next doc visit this Saturday.

Wednesday, February 09, 2005
The doctor's checkup on the 5th was routine. From hereon, I will be meeting her every other week.I think that the baby has moved down a lil bit. I am able to breathe so much easier, even after a heavy meal or when lying down. I sang a bit to it yesterday, but there was no response from inside. Did s/he hate it or did my lullaby lull it to sleep?!!We are very close to deciding on a boy's name. Still searching for a girl's name. I've drawn up a list of baby items to buy. Hopefully we can start shopping this weekend.

The past week has been so much fun at mom's. It was the week when she organised my poochootal. It was filled with relatives, bangles, new clothes, jewellery, mehndi...At its 29th week, my baby has started to have strong movements several times a day. But I still can't clearly establish its wakey/sleepy pattern.

Baby's been kicking and moving all day the last 2 days. And I am very, very hungry especially in the afternoons and evenings. I wonder if hunger is related to the baby's activity.I've been reading about delivery procedures and scaring the hell outta myself! I didn't know about all the gross things that happens during a delivery. So I've closed the books for now and concentrating instead on breast feeding, nappies etc :)

I am now at 25 weeks and 6 days. The baby's been kicking well today. A friend emailed me this morning that a baby's sleep pattern when we are pregnant with them continues after they are born. Well, mine wakes up at 5.30 am sometimes, and I am thinking as to how to change his/her's wakey hours! I would love to have a late riser. My mom says I used to sleep most of the time (even when visitors abounded), so hope my baby's so as well!

Edging towards the finish line!

Just 2 more weeks to reach my due date. My last day at work was the past Friday, although I will be working from home till the baby comes along.

The doc checkup is now every week, and I am weighing in at 77.5 kgs now (same weight in the past 4 checkups, yay!!). Doc says this baby is bigger than Kavin, and is hinting that it will come out earlier than the due date. I certainly will welcome that :)

Baby movements are going strong. It seems to have tons of hiccups everyday. And it does much more stretching than kicks (with Kav, I remember only the kicks very prominently). My digestion has visibly become sluggish, mainly in the evenings; so that is when I am taking it slow and eating less but more often. I feel heavier too in the tummy as bedtime approaches.

My mom has now come to stay with me, and that is a huge comfort factor as well. Kav is just clinging to her, and that gives me the time to work as well as other little pleassures like this blog. I have done the initial shopping needed for the baby and me, and packed for the hospital. The insurance cards etc required for my cashless hospitalization is also ready. I had many moments of panic this weekend, since my doc was out of town. But she is back now, and I am still pregnant; so all is well :).

Kav is doing great at pre-school. I am really enjoying the parents teachers meet they organize every month. He is involved in so many group activities that they display in the classroom, that makes Rajesh and me so proud. He has started to say a little more of what is happening in school, rather than the usual I hit this guy and I pulled that girl! Btw, the teachers say he is active, but well-behaved, and always listens to the teachers when they ask him to stop doing something!

Kav and school

Lots of activities at school this week. Rajesh was invited to attend a Father's Day activity session with Kav. Mom's were strictly not allowed :( He bonded with Kav doing rhymes, exercises and some painting as well. Kav, along with one other boy, was the most hyper-active and constantly had to be cajoled or threatened to get something done (right). But it was all fun for daddy and a proud day as well, since Kav completed the assigned painting activity real well.

The next day, at the parents teachers meet, we were met with a report card, that was updated every month!! It ran over 5 pages, with skills categorized as Cognitive, Communication, Activity, bsic concepts etc. Phew! Basically, he was doing very well in the activities and sports area, and well in the purely academic section. The teacher said he was never still to provide any answers, and always wanted to run after the toys or other kids. As expected :)

But I have to admit that it was a special day to see my kid's first report card, and right away, I realised that the grades are never an indication of what he knows or dosen't know. For eg, he was graded low in recognizing shapes and colors, although he is brilliant at it at home, when he is in the mood. And he got a 'very good' at putting on his own shoes, although he has never once done that at home!!

Close to completing my 7th month

The past couple of months have flown past; and have been thankfully, trouble-free except for the niggle in my hip and back. I had my 7th month checkup last week; and weighed in at 76 kgs (+2 since last month). And most of all, my glucose tolerance test came up good and hence I can gorge on more sweets now :) Baby kicks and movements are fine. Although my doc seems to be getting kick out of making me paranoid by saying that I have entered my painful phase now. Indigestion and more aches and pains will be the norm by the end of month!! Or so she says.

Kav has been so great at school. He is enjoying his van trips, but is still tight-lipped about what actually happens at school! He continues to talk non-stop, and has started to talk in English as well. Just random sentences, here and there; but it's so cute. And he has become such a brat at teasing people by repeating what they say in a mocking tone!

My valagaapu is being organized along with my dad's 60th bday on the 24th of August. Planning to just invite some close friends over.

Kav completes 2 weeks at pre-school

I think the day I wrote the last post, was the day we went scouting for a good pre-school in our area.Fortunately, the very 2nd school that we visited, Euro Kids, was to our liking. It was neat, spacious with tons of toys, teachers and activities. And all I had to do was fill in the admission form, and was all done. We took the evening to ponder over, and started Kav the next day.

Kav has been loving it there! There are more disciplined than his former school, with a bit more structure. They do many fun stuff almost everyday, and are great at keeping the parents in the loop, which was a major gripe for me before. They even have a yahoo group for parents and teachers to interact with each other. Kav gets star tattoos on his hand, on the days that he is a good boy!! So far he has gotten 2!!!

Kav still does not give a full account of what happens in the classroom. In the sense, he tells a few things, but still does not know the teachers or his mates names. Not sure how much he is comfortable with the English communication that goes on. Rajesh and I have gotten so used to talking to him in Tamil, that it feels conversing with him in any other language :).

24 weeks old younger sibling

The 5th month scan confirmed that Kav's younger sibling is now 24 weeks old, and weighing about 740 gms. Kav has been saying that he wants a sister, but I doubt that wish will come true!

Kav's pre-school is ready to commence tomorrow, but I am not sure if I want him to continue in the same playschool. I feel like a terrible mom for not having scouted for pre-schools and deciding by now. But then, pre-schools were not mandatory when I was studying; when did it change where parents feel pressurised to put the kid in a good pre-school itself?? Jeez, I am not ready for this crazy filled aspect of parenting! I want Kav to go to a school that is safe, big, where there is lots of scope for extra-curricular activities, where grades are not the be-all and end-all, and teachers are nice and understanding. And of course, where parents are not expected to take over the role of a teacher as well! So yes, I probably I will never find one!! :)

For now, Kav can continue in Apple Kids. No complaint against it; except that their pick up service is unreliable and they are farther away now that we have moved to our new home. I am checking out a school that is nearby tomorrow; will see how that pans out.

My little baby has started to kick strongly the past 2 days. Even during the scan, it was one hyper baby that was turning around, kicking around, holding its legs with its hands, and basically being a real cutie pie! And yes, the profile shot of the baby proves that it is going to be absolute replica of dad! Again!!

My 5th month checkup

I am at around 18 weeks now. Just across the half way point. I went to the doc's office after a heavy, heavy lunch was got on the weighing scale, with dread. I have put on about 2 kgs (maybe a wee less), making my total 71 kgs . My doc said that was ok, and I was relieved! But then, I was 71 at the time of delivery during Kav's pregnancy, so I know I have my work cut out after this baby is out!! Blood and protein tests were fine. I have the 5th month complete scan in a couple of weeks.

The exciting news is that the baby has started out with regular kicks. I think I have started to feel it early; maybe because I am more tuned to it or because the baby is bigger already.

I had a huge event to manage at my office last week. It was an outdoor marathon event that we were organising and I was on my feet all day. Don't know where I got the gosh from; but I kept going and the day was a big success. I had felt a little dizzy as I was having lunch that day, but nothing that a little glucose didn't take care of. My doc was more alarmed that I had glucose, rather than my dizzy spell. She is extremely paranoid about sugar levels, and keeps warning me off lots of juices, fruits etc.

Kav has been at my mom's place this week and I so miss him. But with us moving to our new place tomorrow and will all the packing happening, the house looks like a hurricane already without his help! He has started to talk longer on the phone without being bored. He told me today about his friend there, about his lunch, about his poopy even! His poopies are always a big event at our place, since he has been struggling with them in the past 2 months, maybe going once in 4-5 days! We have started him on some meds and are monitoring how effective they are.

Off to dig into some protein and do some packing...

Feeling adventurous?

Yes, I do! I think it's about time I start writing about my second baby, on the way!! I have started my 5th month of pregnancy with a due date of September 28th, give or take.

My check ups have been going great, and the Down's syndrome scan last month came back negative. I have started to feel slight movement since yesterday morning, but I am not sure. If they become stronger in the next couple of weeks, then Apr 26th will be the day when it started :).

On my end, my morning sicknesses and indigestion were stronger this time compared to the first; but thankfully, disappeared in the 4th month. I am able to go without food for a little longer than last month, when I was constantly feeling hungry or cranky!

The only worrying aspect is the alarming rate at which I am putting on weight. It's now a 6 kg total add on at the end of the 4th month! Unfortunately, neither is my starting weight as low as with Kav (when I was a measly 50 kg), nor am I exercising as I used to. Hoping for a negligible weight gain this month (check up next weekend).

I've told Kav about the baby. He has been sweet at times, and his usual aggressive at times (when he wanted to hit the baby, and hence my tummy!). He comes and says hi all on his own, and that is just sooo cute.

I've not had time to sit and introspect about the baby or the changes it will bring to our lives. I think a combination of the fact that I am working now, as well as the house construction, plus of course, my little dynamo at home, are keeping away any kind of meaningful thought from entering my mind!! Just as well, since time is just flying by.

Time flies brings me to.. Kav turned 3 on the 15th. He was super excited this time; right from the cake, to inviting his friends, to playing in the bouncy castle, and the gifts. Oh, the gifts. He just couldn't take the tension of what was inside. He blew out the candle on his own, and that made me realize how much he has grown up in the past year. He talks non-stop, in complete complex sentences, remembers every single detail (like how his aunt pinched him some 20 days back!) and surprises us constantly with the things he does and says (like mimicking his dad's 'Lets go' or telling people that he is studying pre-KG!). I only wish he tones down his aggression; cause I am tired of punishing him, and they have stopped having the desired effect anyways!

More later...

Hip hip hurrah!

Kav went pee-pee in the bathroom for the first time today!! I had almost given up on potty training, not that I was very military about it. But today, my mom said that after lunch he said he wanted to pee and she rushed him to the bathroom, and he did the deed there.

I am thrilled with the break through. Lately, he would just hold on and on for hours, till we put a diaper on. If he is not able to hold on any longer, he would just go and declare after the fact. Every time we would remind him or take him to the bathroom, he would just refuse to go or start to play in water. Fingers crossed!

One-liners

Considering how I just don't seem to get time to blog, I have decided to come online just to post one-liners if needed. Kav is talking so much and is doing so much everyday, I feel that I am not recording it in his blog.

OK, to start.

He started out singing a 'umachi paatu' (religious song) that my mom was apparently singing as a lullaby last week. It has a lot of complicated words, but he has got the first 4 lines down pat. My mom was amazed as well.

He has these little hiding spots for his stuff, esp the forbidden ones! Like between the sofa cushions for his (daddy's) pen (we want his to use only crayons or pencils) or putting our keys in a kitchen dabba or the cooker weight in his cycle!

His next annual day at school is coming up. Looks like they are practicising everyday, but he is refusing to divulge the details.

Here's the latest photo of my little angel.
